New Index to "Phelps Family in America" Available
Well-known to many Phelps family researchers is the two-volume book, The Phelps Family of America and Their English Ancestors, by Judge Oliver Seymour Phelps and Andrew T. Servin, originally published in 1899. While the book was published with an index standard for its time, the index is largely restricted to male surnames and is of limited use to many researchers. Margaret Phelps Swanson has developed an updated index and other comments to the 1899 book. She and Nancy J. Pennington took it upon themselves to re-index the two volumes totaling 1869 pages. This new publication, including over 250 pages of new index entries, is the result of their work. It includes geographic place names for nearly every entry along with the maiden names (when known) of all female spouses. A work in progress, I've collaborated with Margaret to make an interim version available to Phelps family researchers as an Acrobat file. This newly expanded index is now available from the site Phelps Family in America.

Greetings to the Phelps clan!
Great work with your research. Have enjoyed following your entries. Have you by chance happened upon the website trajectory.com? May be useful....
Best of luck to you!
Nice page I will post some items as I get time.
I will post some items as I get time, Thanks for the site.
My name is Monika Fitzgerald and reside in Greensboro, NC. I have been searching for years on a Robert Ray Fitzgerald resided in Richmond Virginia, about 1968 with a wife and believe 13 year old son. Robert had a son by he's 1st marriage, his name was Stanley Fitzgerald. Has Robert Ray Fitzgerald ever crossed your research I would have to guess he was born between 1905-1915. If able to help in my research please email me email@example.com. Sincerely, Monika
Nothing to do with the post, just wanted to say that I can't wait to go through your previous posts. The Phelps family name shows up many times (as neighbors and marriage) in the Stogsdill family history. It seems like they were all over in Pulaski County, KY and Phelps County, MO. It will be curious to compare notes.
I just started a blog for my Family Genealogy so it will be good to see how you've managed to do it.
Best regards and thanks!

Can you tell me if your Ruth E Phelps was born in De Kalb Missouri in 1902 to John Quincy Phelps and Rachel M Phelps?
Thank you for this! It will take me a bit to get thru it all. I am looking for a Phelps family who possibly lost their father/husband to a train accident. In 1928 And the wife adopted out at least one of their children. A boy who was my grandfather. Lee Kendall. The Phelps or Phillips family was from the Coldwater/ Hillsdale Michigan area. Lee was moved to Ludington with his family Ralph and Ida Kendall.
Just wanted to say thanks to Brian for all the research he has done including the Phelps Family in America site and it's extensive information gleaned from Servin's book. I was able to trace my Phelps ancestors back to Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England and Brian's site has much information on that Phelps branch.
You folks are a blessing.I started decades ago when I was looking through my grandma's bible.the names john and Molly phelps inspired me.my great grandma and grandpa.he died in 56.I was too young to remember but one meeting.I would pull his white beard and he would laugh as I sit on his lap in his rocking chair.one of my sweetest and first memories.I was 3...your research brings him back to me
I was wondering if you have information on David S. Phelps and his wife Melita Lighty Moon Phelps?
my dna doesnt link me to john lewis phelps.i go to the others by way of matching cousins but not my great grandfather.he is listed as not linking to the named father for him.what does this mean.seems my test is not complete.i know who my mom and her mom was my grandma ina ....just ina ...phelps strickland.so if john lewis phelps is my grandmas daddy what happened.i dont know who was her daddy.so i am at a loss.
Nice page I will post some items as
state illinois I get time.
why does john lewis phelps of choctaw county miss not connect to william alexander phelps of choctaw county even though he is listed as my grandma ina phelps father.my uncle said once in 1999 that my grandmas maiden name was Lewis.it said on her grave Phelps.ina p strickland 1899 to 1979.magnolia cemetery lucedale miss.i do not connect to any of john lewis phelps but i do to my grandma.it was said something between john and alexander dont appy and it shows me linked by all that gobblygoop dna stuff to my grandma.could the phelps dna search have the wrong father for my grandma.i know there is a mess up about the name rebecca .her name was only ina.if you do the tree they have for her and her husband my gfather it leads to them having the same grandpa and ggrandpa john s strickland through martha latham on phelps side and john on strickland .but my grandma doesnt connect to the john lewis phelps line as far as was explained to me.per sudden link dna survey 2011 thank you
Phloating Phelps, Where you posted is a web page not well monitored. Posted to by various folk and not well coordinated. I think your question relates to a Phelps web page shown at the top which was posted by a Bryan Phelps in 2008 and appears long gone. Doubt he will respond
Yes to clear up genealogy, you will have to do dna testing, preferably YDNA testing and dig deep in the "goop".
In all the Phelps related dna testing there are related private discussion groups
I used to maintain the ydna test results for Phelps at ftdna and created a number of private google groups. Not sure which would apply to you.
Key is that they all were related to ydna and also SNP testing. My last web site on genealogies mostly using ydna as confirmation is at two sites.
I formerly managed a Phelps ydna ftdna site, now managed by another, now considerably changed at
https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/phelps/about quite a few pages there with LINKS to other web pages. His ydna display approach is very different from what i thought was meaningful.
Many if the dna results are private to those who have been tested, and a members of a discussion group.
Key in all this is that you should do ydna testing at ftdna and maybe SNP testing. It aint easy with less assistance now than in the past.
Also... in the genealogies shown usually only the Phelps paternal lines of those who have been ydna tested are shown... somtimes a bit more.
